What is more likely to fail catastrophically, a steel bar or pipe?
Which of the two, a steel bar or a steel pipe, is more prone to bend before breaking?
you do realize that you asked to opposite questions.
the pipe would be more likely to fail catastrophically.
the bar would bend more before failing. the strain on the bar would be less for a given amount of deformation.
however, for the same amount of material, the pipe would be stronger because there is less material along the center plane, and that material contributes very little to the strength.
